I By Kevin Roche & Elizabeth Friszell-Neroulas 2013 NATIONAL RUN SURVEY For the 33rd year, the career fre service takes to the pages of Firehouse ® Magazine to share and compare statistics about company and department activity levels, funding, staffng and pay. A total of 218 fre departments took part in this year's survey, representing 44 states and fve Canadian provinces. The depart- ments represented in this latest survey protect 84,581,118 people and they have budgets totaling nearly $16 billion. They provide this service with 3,916 engine companies, 1,413 ladder companies, 2,109 ambulances and numerous specialized units.
