FROM THE EDITOR | By Nancy Perry An Exchange of Ideas There is much we can learn from the Israeli emergency care system In June 2002, EMS World Magazine fi rst reported from the front lines of EMS response in Israel when veteran EMS providers Mike Taigman and Jeff Forster did a ridealong with Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national EMS agency. a A E Exclusive Supplement to (14'+)0 'ZEJCPIG a g l Their article U.S. EMS Leaders Visit the Front Lines of Israeli MCI Response: An Exclusive Report and photos offered an unprecedented glimpse into the chal- lenges of providing EMS care under the most extreme circum- stances. In April of this year, we were able to again revisit the workings of ® the Israeli EMS system when Associate Editor John Erich traveled to Israel as part of a delegation of EMS leaders and decision-makers. The trip was arranged by Leslee Stein-Spencer, RN, MS, who oversees medical administration and regulatory compliance for the Chicago Fire Department, who worked with Isra- el’s consulate to the midwestern U.S. “It’s so important for us in the United States to open up these types of relation- ships and share experiences in emer- gency medical services,” says Stein- Spencer. “Many times it’s a forgotten profession, and I think by going there and opening the door, there’s so much we can learn from each other. I hope it doesn’t end with our trip, and that more ™ EMS people will be able to go over and learn from the Israelis.” In this issue’s exclusive supplement, Foreign Exchange, Erich writes about the details of the trip and the many lessons learned by delegate members. “So many of the challenges of EMS are the same wherever you go, and nobody has them all fi gured out,” says Erich. “So while there are important contex- tual and environmental differences to how it’s done in Israel, there’s a lot to be learned from inspecting another system up close and picking the brains of those who operate it.” As always, we welcome your thoughts.
